How often do you tell people you don’t have money to buy something you actually really need, but then you decide to go out for a few drinks or dinner and spend double the amount without flinching? Does it ever happen that your money is gone before the end of the month and you blame your lack of money on bills, even though they only took up a third of your income? As you might have realised, this discussion is all about finances and the way you choose to spend your money.
However… Before you continue reading… this is a follow up from the first 3 exercises. If you haven’t done those yet, you might not understand what this is all about. So start with the first exercise to determine your Highest Values by clicking here. If you have done the first exercise, but not the second one, catch up by clicking here. If you have done the first two, but still need to catch up on exercise number 3, do that now by clicking here.
… for the rest of you, open your file with all your previous answers, get your pen and answer question number 4
Money is yet another thing you spend in order of your priority list, meaning your Highest Values. If I tell you that I can send you to a seminar that will change your life, you will never need a holiday again, since your life will be one big holiday, but it will cost you 2000 of whatever your currency is, you might think that it’s too expensive and not take that step. However… a week later you go on holiday and spend 4000 of your currency on entertainment and rest to help you escape the life you don’t want. This is not because suddenly you got more money, but because you value entertainment and escapism more than changing your life…
Money is a strange thing, as it is very clear what people find important when looking at where they spend their money. When people say that something is too expensive for them, it doesn’t mean that it costs too much money, all it means is that they don’t value whatever is being sold enough to pay for it. I find this all the time in my line of work…
If something is important enough, it doesn’t matter at what cost, you will pay. If your life can be saved with a miracle cure for something like cancer, your will pay over 100 000 of your currency, but ask for 2000 to better your current life and prevent the cancer, you will probably answer: “sorry, I don’t have the money”.
Here are a few examples of how people spend their money and what it could possibly mean:
| Things you value | Higher level need that is fulfilled |
| Food | Health (only the best organic food will do) |
| Food | Cooking (try different things) |
| Food | Socialising (eating with friends) |
Or
| Things you value | Higher level need that is fulfilled |
| Mortgage | Investment (if this is your way of building your finances) |
| Mortgage | Security (if your home is purely for safety and relatively cheap) |
| Mortgage | Style and comfort (if your home is more than just a home, it is decorated and expensive taste |
Here is mine
| Things you value | Higher level need that is fulfilled |
| Inspiring events | Learning to tap into my inspiration |
| Indoor heating and warm clothes | Comfort /Warmth |
| Experiences with friends | Social |
Now it’s your turn… don’t judge your answers, be honest with yourself and answer this question…
Question 4: How do you spend your money? (Think outside of thing like taxes… if a lot goes into your home, is that maybe an investment, security or need for status) Where do you spend money without thinking about it twice? If I gave you 2000 of your currency right now… where would that money go?
Can you see where most of your money goes and why? You might not like what you see at this moment, but hey, now that you know, we can work on changing that for you
